Mukuro No one has translated the manga which details Mukuro's backstory, so here is my attempt. Please don't be shy about sending me corrections. Mandatory disclaimer: This chapter is not pretty. Please don't read on if you are offended by strong language or graphic violence. I'll assume that you already know Mukuro and Hiei, but here's a quick rundown of the minor characters: Helmet: A tall fighter in full armor, with a spider-legged helmet which covers most of his face. I don't know his name, so until further notice, I'm calling him Helmet. Shigure: A fighter who takes piercing to an extreme. He has rings through his jaw, his temple, and--this is my favorite--from ear to ear. No, not two piercings linked with a chain which dangles from ear to ear--one enormous piercing which passes straight through his cranium. He fights with--what else?--a huge, bladed ring. Hiei fought him as part of the test which Mukuro put him through to join her service. Blobby guys: A few lines are spoken by a pair of big, blobby fighter types of no distinction. Don't worry about 'em, they're Makai redshirts. Yuu Yuu Hakusho, Vol. 19 Chapter 5: Special Day Hiei and the rest of Mukuro's crew have just returned from patrolling the Makai for humans who have fallen through from the Ningenkai. English Romaji p. 93 Blobby guy on the right: Three years. I feel overwhelmed. Blobby guy Are we going to have to do this on the ridiculous patrol for three years? left: Helmet: Stop grumbling. Guchi wa yosunda na. Everything is our fault, since we lost. Shigure: But there's a bit which I find Da ga, sessha shoushou incomprehensible. gesen. Enki was certainly strong, but if Mukuro-sama attacked seriously, I expect that she would be unbeatable. Helmet: No... That was all of Mukuro-sama's power. Shigure: Why do you say that? (Or: What are Dou iu koto da? you saying?) Helmet: Her strength is greatly influenced by the condition of her spirit. Anna nagoyaka na taikai de wa saikouji no hanbun-kurai no chikara ga seki no yama darou. p. 94 Hiei and his men walk through the corridors of the Mukade. Helmet: Perhaps, from now on, seeing her Tabun kore kara saki mo true strength will be unbearable. ano kata no shin no tsuyosa no miru koto wa kanawanu darou na. It was exactly like it is now. Sore ga choudo ima kurai no jiki datta. It's worrisome. Ki o tsukeru koto da na. Hiei looks up with a determined expression. Mukuro's quarters: Marble floors, busts on pedestals, vast swaths of fabric covering all the walls so that the room looks like a womb. There is an enormous bed in an alcove, heaped high with cushions and drapery. Mukuro is sprawled on it like a forgotten doll. Mukuro: What's your business? Nan ka you ka. p. 95 Shots of Hiei and Mukuro talking; we cannot see Mukuro's face. Hiei: I'm bored. I want to challenge Taikutsu da. Teawase you. negaitai. Ore wa kekkou tanoshi n de iru ga na. Go. I'm in a bad mood today. Ike. Kyou wa kibun ga warui. Hiei: ... ... That fool of a slave trader. Dorei shounin chikou. Mukuro stares at Hiei silently. Her face is darkened and sad. Hiei speaks with a calculating look. Your eyes changed color. Me no iro ga kawatta ze. p. 96 The slave trader, naked and obscenely fat, lounges on a huge sofa, covered with clinging women of every species. A little girl, her long hair tied up in a ponytail, her skinny body wrapped in a strapless dress, her pitifully thin arms bound behind her with straps... but her expression is bland, even flirtatious. The slave trader's hand grasps the sheet between her feet... A blank gray panel. p. 97 The little girl sits with a haunted expression on her face, dressed in a negligee and fetters. Mukuro: As soon as I was born, he (thinking) remodeled my stomach. In order to make his wonderful toy easier to play with, on each of my birthdays, he opened a new wound. The more I resisted, the more he was delighted. With his asshole of a mouth, he would whisper, "Shall I cut off your head and thrust myself down your neck?" If I said, "Please do," he would keep laughing like a child. "Just as I expected from you, my daughter," he would say, and keep laughing. The panel is empty of everything except Mukuro's words and a writhing black background. On my seventh birthday, I drenched myself in acid to spoil his interest in me. He tossed me away lightly. My life Aitsu wa assari ore o began that day, and I gave my suteta. Kyou kara hontou birth-cry in a cesspool. no jinsei hajimari koedame no naka de ubugoe o ageta. Hiei speaks. Hiei: The memories which you looked at after my fight with Shigure-tono-- They're probably why I'm so strong today. Note: When Hiei was healing in the pod after his fight with Shigure, Mukuro used her cybernetics to hook into Hiei's mind and see the story of how he grew up. p. 98 Mukuro: Stop. Hiei: Why do you let that guy live? You probably know where he lives. Mukuro primes her cybernetic arm with a "click." We can see only her human eye, as her heart beats wildly. Mukuro: Stop it. Do you want to die? Yamero. Shinitai ka. Mukuro stares in horror and her heart pounds as she remembers: The slave trader, looking like a kindly old grandpa, leading a little girl through a field, setting a crown of flowers on her head... ...Lifting her up as she laughs in joy... p. 99 Hiei speaks to Mukuro, who sits in the distance, head bowed. Hiei: Has he, for a long time, depended upon some capricious kindness which you've shown only to him? You didn't become stronger because of your curse. It was because of your vacillation. An extreme close-up on Hiei's eyes, with an unpleasant expression. You're a pitiful bitch. Mukuro slams her cybernetic arm into Hiei's stomach so hard that she lifts him off his feet, and the force of the blast she fires into him shoots blood out of his mouth and back in a fine haze.. p. 100 The blast punches a hole through the Mukade's outer wall. Shigure and Helmet shudder as the aftershock thrums through the ship. Mukuro walks out of her rooms calmly, past the two blobby guys. Blobby guy on the right: Mukuro-sama! What on earth...!? Mukuro-sama! Ittai...!? Mukuro: Carry on as you are. Kono mama susume. Blobby guy on the right: B... But-- Shi... Shikashi. Mukuro glares back at him. Mukuro: Do you want to be killed, too? Omae mo korosaretai no ka? The blobby guys sweat bullets. Blobby ...! ...! guys: The Mukade rumbles into the distance, leaving Hiei collapsed on the forest floor in its wake. Hiei lies flat on his back with a smoking hole clear through his stomach. His expression is less concerned than one might expect. Hiei: Hn. Fun. p. 104 Hiei: Well? Naa? Slave Tasukete kure... Inochi trader: Help me... Only my life... dake wa. Slave trader: Please! I'll do anything! Tanomu!! Nandemo yaru!! Hiei: Sono uchi shinitaku naru. [1]
