Old man: You're quite famous. Got plenty of fans. They say you're cute Alpha: No way... ...B, but I hardly get any customers! Old man: Even those who only come occasionally are looking. They're shy. -------------------------------------(13)------------------------------------- Old man: There, a full tank. Going far? Alpha: Yes, to Yokohama. I need coffee beans... [How much is it?] Old man: Yokohama! That's a long way! It's all right, today's on the house! Alpha: I couldn't possibly... Old man: Well, don't worry. You should be careful, the roads are bad You may find your way suddenly cut off. You probably won't be able to get there by the direct route -------------------------------------(09)------------------------------------- Old man: Be sure and call again after you come back. You can invite me for a coffee or something, in payment. Alpha: Thanks, Ojisan ["Ojisan" == 'Uncle'] Ojisan: Ah... are you a robot? You're lucky... you look healthy This old man's health isn't so good Alpha: Hm, well... Want to swap? -------------------------------------(15)------------------------------------- Ojisan: Hehe, well, I guess the both of us are stuck with the bodies God gave us Take care, now Alpha: [Thankyouuu] Ojisan: To tell the truth, I'm a fan too -------------------------------------(16)------------------------------------- Alpha: Some years ago, my owner, leaving me in charge of the shop, suddenly left for somewhere Where he is and what he's doing, I don't know I wonder if he's ever coming back... I think I'm glad I'm a robot I can wait as long as it takes -------------------------------------(17)------------------------------------- Alpha: !! -------------------------------------(18)------------------------------------- Alpha: ...Oh, my! Hmm, it looks like the sea has risen a bit over the years -------------------------------------(19)------------------------------------- Alpha: I guess I'll have to take the mountain road -------------------------------------(20)------------------------------------- Alpha: Yokohama was underwater too The Yokohama of these days is on top of the hills -------------------------------------(22)------------------------------------- Alpha: Er... I'd like some coffee beans, please Assistant: [Sure] Alpha: It looked like the "Yokohama metropolis" of just a few years ago was now only a dream Alpha: [Thanks] Assistant: [Sure] Alpha: ...Now it was a "People's town", where time flowed lazily -------------------------------------(23)------------------------------------- Alpha: These days, the whole world has changed a lot It looks like the twilight of this age has quietly arrived I think I'll probably stay around to see it through -------------------------------------(24)------------------------------------- Note: To Alpha: Glad to hear you're well. Later. Alpha: I've got all the time in the world, after all Alpha: Ojisan, I'm baaack! Ojisan: Oh! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 25. Story 01: The evening of the sweet smell of steel ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------(29)------------------------------------- Alpha: ...Hmmm I wish he'd written something more... Note: To Alpha: Glad to hear you're well. Later. Alpha: Ah, welcome! Ojisan: Yo, I'm back again Alpha: I'll put some coffee on! Ojisan: It seems you're not very busy, hm? -------------------------------------(30)------------------------------------- Alpha: Only you today, Ojisan Ojisan: ! Well well Hmm! Alpha, you have a gun too Alpha: Yes... Ah, it's alright, it's not loaded Ojisan: Hmm, this type's rather unusual. I guess you'd hold it like this... -------------------------------------(31)------------------------------------- Alpha: Yes... the crystal-like look and colour are nice, aren't they... ...It was a present From Owner Ojisan: I see Alpha: He said he was giving it to me for self-protection Me and weapons are, well... -------------------------------------(32)------------------------------------- Alpha: ...Hey, it's not like that If you looked closely, the gun's corners sparkled where the light hit it Probably because it was always being polished Ojisan: It's a real treasure A treasure... Alpha: Ehehe -------------------------------------(33)------------------------------------- Alpha: A refill, on the house Ojisan: Oh, you shouldn't -------------------------------------(34)------------------------------------- Ojisan: ...It's so calm here If you want business you'd be better off near Kamakura or Hayama Alpha: We're more a viewpoint than a cafe really ...I like it here Talking with Ojisan like this, watching the sea... The busy times and the slow times I like them all -------------------------------------(35)------------------------------------- Ojisan: ...What's this Alpha: One of Owner's hobbies. It's called a "Gekkin" (Gekkin is written "Moon Harp" -M.) Usually I don't play it in public, but... -------------------------------------(36)------------------------------------- Alpha: Maybe... just today Takahiro: Ah, here you are Alpha: Welcome Takahiro: Don't give me "Hi", Grandad. You came by yourself... Alpha: Takahiro, something to drink? -------------------------------------(37)------------------------------------- Takahiro: Well, I'll have a Meiporo then... hey, what's that you've got? Alpha: It got busy all of a sudden... Just specially for today, okay Takahiro? ...This is... a Chinese evening piece -------------------------------------(39)------------------------------------- [Ojisan:] With a surprisingly conservative plucking, the sound of the Gekkin soon smoothly started to flow out -------------------------------------(40)------------------------------------- [Ojisan:] Sometimes I wonder if Alpha-san isn't really human This made me think so too -------------------------------------(42)------------------------------------- [Alpha:] That day's opening hours Were a little longer than usual End of chapter 1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 43. Story 02: The Misago of the bay ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------(44)------------------------------------- [Takahiro:] That day I went to Alpha's shop to play Alpha: Unusual to see you here alone like this, Takahiro... here you go Takahiro: Thankyou Alpha: Where's Grandpa today? The garage? Takahiro: At a street meeting since yesterday (Well, more of a drinking meeting) ...Hey, Alpha Alpha: Hmm? -------------------------------------(45)------------------------------------- Takahiro: Alpha, you've been here a long time, haven't you? Alpha: Uhuh Takahiro: I thought you might know... yesterday I saw something really strange Alpha: I don't like scary stories! Takahiro: I was reaaaally scared Alpha: Eeeeeeee [Takahiro:] Alpha was scared, but she listened to my story -------------------------------------(46)------------------------------------- Takahiro: Yesterday I was out fishing on the tidelands There was noone around but me One moment I saw where there were fish moving about And then -------------------------------------(49)------------------------------------- Takahiro: For some reason she was completely naked... But she smiled, so I felt a little relieved But!! -------------------------------------(50)------------------------------------- Takahiro: Uwaaaaaaa -------------------------------------(51)------------------------------------- Takahiro: Before I knew it, I'd run all way back to town I'd left the fish behind too But I wasn't about to go back and get them When I got back to the house, Grandpa was out at the neighbourhood meeting too I was so scared I couldn't sleep till morning It's all true! Alpha, what do you think? -------------------------------------(52)------------------------------------- Alpha: ...It's the Misago Takahiro: Mi...? Alpha: A girl called "Misago"... Owner told me about her a long time ago. I guess you really saw her... Takahiro: Misago Alpha: Yes. It seems she's lived in the forest near the bay for a long time -------------------------------------(53)------------------------------------- Alpha: This strange Misago person lives in Koajiro bay and catches fish to eat She doesn't like adults, but sometimes comes out to play with children. But because her fangs are scary they always run away Owner said he saw her deeper into the valley - when he was younger that is -------------------------------------(54)------------------------------------- Takahiro: Now that you mention it... I didn't feel scared at all until I saw the fangs... Alpha: I guess she came out to play because you were alone Takahiro: Yeah Alpha: Look what's coming -------------------------------------(55)------------------------------------- Alpha: It's going to pour down on your way home Takahiro: Sooooo I should go now Alpha: You should really stay Takahiro: I'll be alright Thankyou very much, seeya Alpha: Yeah... take care -------------------------------------(56)------------------------------------- Takahiro: Well I got that wrong! Didn't even make it close to home! -------------------------------------(57)------------------------------------- Takahiro: Drat I'm freezing... Dammit... feeling faint too Grandad... Alpha ...A -------------------------------------(59)------------------------------------- [Takahiro:] Misago bared her fangs and smiled But this time I wasn't so scared And because it was so warm... I started to fall asleep... -------------------------------------(60)------------------------------------- Takahiro: Oh E... Eh Alpha: Aah, you're awake? I'm so glad. Everyone's been looking for you since last night Takahiro: ...Where's Misago? Alpha: Eh? -------------------------------------(61)------------------------------------- Takahiro: Misago warmed me... Alpha: Oh my! And dried your clothes too, I guess Ah It's true! -------------------------------------(62)------------------------------------- [Takahiro:] "Why did Misago go, I wonder" [Alpha:] "She dried you off, but didn't want to be seen by other people, I'm sure" Alpha: If you meet her again you should thank her, yes? Takahiro: Yeah Before I grow up... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 63. Ojisan: Don't worry, we've got a good hospital I know the doctor. She came from a big hospital far away -------------------------------------(88)------------------------------------- Ojisan: Sensei... Sensei: She's alright. The thunderbolt passed around her body Her hair and skin are burnt so she'll have to stay here for two or three days though It's been a long time since I had a robot patient Ojisan: Two or three days... she looked like she was seriously injured though Sensei: You can talk to her if you like -------------------------------------(89)------------------------------------- Ojisan: Yo Alpha: Ojisan... Sensei: Looks like she's still worrying over her appearance Ojisan: Hey, you... Hey, don't run! Thankyou very much regarding the bill... Sensei: Well, I should say it's I who should be grateful. Wowwww. That must have been difficult, all the way from Musashino Girl: No, not really -------------------------------------(146)------------------------------------ Alpha: It's been a long time since anyone sent anything here. Who is it from? Girl: Let's see... From a Mr. Hatsuseno... Alpha: ! [From Owner?] Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou 1 - End (*) I've seen Owner's name transcribed as "Hasseno", and while that was my first thought too, from looking at how those kanji are employed in other names in ENAMDICT I suspect "Hatsuseno" is correct (unless anyone has better evidence to the contrary). It's a weakness of furigana that it's difficult to distinguish between "large tsu" and "small tsu (consonant doubler)"... =^^=
