One of the GuShouShin is also in attendance, looking rather cute in the beginning, hanging onto Tsuzuki's shoulder. Konoe: "So the suspect is a dead person?" Tsuzuki: "No chief, this Dracula case is much more complicated. The suspect, the singer Maria Wong, was reported dead by suicide in the Chinese database about two months ago." Konoe: "Humph." Tsuzuki: "But we met a living moving Maria." Konoe: "So it's a question of a dead person coming back to life..." Tsuzuki: "Right! Unless of course, the Chinese database is incorrect." Konoe reminds them that the higher-ups are getting impatient and want the case closed. Tsuzuki then goes on to say a load of nonsense while sitting on a bookshelf. The chief asks someone get Tsuzuki to shut up. Ticked off, Konoe throws the book at Tsuzuki (literally). He doesn't care if the culprit is dead or alive, just solve the case. Hisoka adds in the point that Maria is being controlled by someone and Tsuzuki confirms that that is his suspicion as well. However, the old Chinese legends and the concept of Yin-Yang don't match up with a blood sucking revived corpse. Hisoka leaves on his own to do some investigation, saying he'll meet Tsuzuki later at 3pm. GuShouShin has a private talk with Konoe about Hisoka. The chief knows all about how Hisoka really died as well as this 'special power'. He'll trust Tsuzuki to deal with it. Much later, Tsuzuki is waiting for Hisoka at the meeting place the boy named. He's ticked off as well, about Hisoka's antisocial attitude and the fact that he is late. Finally, he leaves (after eating lots of apple pie and stuff). Suddenly there are screams, a young girl has fallen unconscious and her guardian is frantic. A doctor suddenly appears on the scene and examines the girl. He determines she's only fainted and will wake shortly so they move her inside, out of the sun. Tsuzuki waits, and the doctor comes out of the room the girl was placed in, saying that she's woken up. The doctor introduces himself. Doctor: "I'm Muraki Kazutaka, father. Your daughter is fine." Tsuzuki sweatdropping: "I'm not her father." Tsuzuki: "I'm afraid you've been distracted from your sightseeing because of this..." Muraki: "No, no I don't mind. It is the duty of a doctor." Tsuzuki: "She recovered well from that." Muraki: "Children really do have a strong life energy. We adults must try to keep up." Muraki: "Don't you think so?" Tsuzuki: "?" Muraki: "Humans...are a very frightening but weak beings. I've lost patients a number of times, perhaps some people have called me a murderer. Medicine cannot fight death." Tsuzuki: "Well, actually I..." Muraki: "I know, I've been a doctor for eight years, the limits of human life. That's why I yearn for a power that overcome that. Don't you want that kind of power? The perfect body and power..." Tsuzuki: This person... "In this world," I sense... "there is no such thing as 'perfect'." something very strange from him... Muraki only looks at Tsuzuki. It is time for everyone to part. Muraki wishes everyone to take care, the guardian thanks him, and the little girl says good-bye. But Muraki has one last thing to say to Tsuzuki as he removes his eyeglasses. Muraki: "You should also take care. Else you might lose someone important." Tsuzuki doesn't like him. Hisoka is sneaking into the off-limits secret archive storage but gets caught by Tsuzuki. Tzuzuki isn't too happy with him and grabs Hisoka by the arm to go to the TV studio. Hisoka: "Don't touch me!" Tsuzuki's grip is blasted away, his hand bleeding. Hisoka is trying to calm down. When Tsuzuki tries to touch him again, Hisoka backs away, yelling at him. Hisoka is an empath, by coming in contact with other people he can see into their minds. And when the spiritual side of someone else is very strong, like Tsuzuki's, Hisoka can't block it out. Tsuzuki: "Oh. My bad. Hey, boy, are you hiding anything else? Something you won't even tell me, your partner?" Hisoka: "...I won't tell. It doesn't concern you." Tsuzuki: Such cold eyes... "Really. I understand. You probably don't know since you entered this world by the chief's connection. I'll tell you this one thing." Tsuzuki explains the deal with Shinigami, how they are people who have a strong desire to return to the living world. That desire is double-edged, possessing the risk of the Shinigami putting his own interests above that of his job. Tsuzuki: "That's why Shinigami work in pairs, to keep an eye on each other." He assigns Hisoka to watch over Maria. Hisoka looks very sad, and slides down to the floor against the wall. Back at Nagasaki, Tsuzuki is sitting by himself and thinking. GuShouShin looms up behind him, like some evil demon. After some trade of insults, GuShouShin reveals his real reason for coming topside. He explains Hisoka's past, how Hisoka was reviled by his parents because of his psychic power, called a monster and locked him up in the basement each time the power was displayed. Tsuzuki understands how Hisoka felt, in order to be a 'normal person' he had to close his heart, in order to not feel pain. GuShouShin trusts that Tsuzuki will find a way to get around the emotional barriers Hisoka has set up around himself. However, it's time to get back to work. Or in Tsuzuki's case, back to sampling the variety of food Nagasaki offers. There is, however, someone following him. A girl who is fighting with a voice in her mind, it wants her to kill for it, but she doesn't want to. When Tsuzuki checks his hair in a store window, he notices his stalker. Later, Tsuzuki is snoozing on a bench by the water. Hisoka sees him, because he's been following Maria. However, Hisoka is still too far away when Maria perpares to drink Tsuzuki's blood. Tsuzuki flips over her. He had studied the pattern of deaths and figured that she would strike in this area next. As he tells her to calmly return with him to the Land of the Dead, she attacks. Tsuzuki: "Are you happy, living by killing people!?" Using a fuda, he paralyzes her movement. But as he approaches her again, he sees tears streaming down her face. Understanding that she was acting against her own will, Tsuzuki apologizes for his harsh words earlier, sympathizing with her. Hisoka steps out of the shadows, rather put out that Tsuzuki knew what was going on all along. Hisoka: "And to think that I was even worried about you for a moment. I'm such an idiot." Tsuzuki: "Eh!? What what? You were worried about me?" Hisoka: "So Maria will return to normal?" Tsuzuki: "No. The fuda's power should isolate her from the control for about an hour. After that, she'll return to a corpse." Maria returns to herself, panicking that she's killed people. Tsuzuki tells her to calm down, as well as explain why she pretended to commit suicide. However it turns out, Maria really did die. She always tried to get along with her stepmother, but all her stepmother saw her as was a valuable piece of merchandise. When Maria couldn't stand it anymore, she killed herself. But she was brought back by 'someone'. When they get back to the studio, Maria's mother appears, yelling at Maria about how many times has she told Maria to never be late for work. Maria calmly tells her stepmother that she won't listen to her anymore. Then Tsuzuki steps in. Enraged, she throws a glass at him but Tsuzuki shatters it with a thought. He's going to have a private talk with her. Hisoka leaves to set up a barrier to prevent other people from interfering and takes Maria with him. Tsuzuki holds a candle, telling Maria's mother that this is her life. If she doesn't cooperate, she'll die. He wants to know who she worked with to bring Maria back to life. How could she as a parent let her child be a murderer? Maria's mother: "You want to lecture me? I don't have to listen to your words. The words of a killer!!" Tsuzuki is shocked. Maria's mother laughing: "Mister told me about you, how in the past you've also killed people. People always sacrifice others in order to live. I have nothing to be ashamed of!! The guilty have no words to say to each other! Am I right?" Tsuzuki takes a water pitcher and douses the candle. Outside, Maria wonders if her mother will be alright. Hisoka tells her not to worry, but he wants to know who it was that was controlling her. Maria can't remember who it is, that's the only thing she can't remember, but she knows his voice in her head. It's some kind of selective amnesia. Maria shivers: "He...he's coming...again..." Hisoka: "Maria?" Maria: "That person...!!" Hisoka looks up. Back inside, the candle is out. Maria's mother is still alive. Tsuzuki: "It was a joke. Were you startled? But if you know my past then you understand don't you? If I kill one person or two, it's all the same to me. You brought Maria's corpse to Japan to be revived, all for the money wasn't it." Maria's mother: "That's right! If she dies, I can't live in luxury anymore!! For that, I don't care who or how many people she kills." Tsuzuki: "The person controlling Maria?" Maria's mother is cowering: "I can't tell you. If I tell you, I'll be killed..." Tsuzuki: "Then perhaps if I tell you? Doctor Muraki." Maria's mother: "You know!?" Tsuzuki: "So it is him. What is his real goal? Not for the money correct?" He isn't one to be motivated by money. He moved with faith. Maria's mother: "That's right. He said he wanted the Shinigami's power to get an even greater power. 'It's' a monster. It's right that he's after you! You suit each other!!" Maria bursts into the room: "Somebody come! Quickly!! That boy, Mister...!" Tsuzuki runs outside, coming the the studio entrance covered in blood. But the culprit is outside, Muraki carrying Hisoka in his arms. Muraki: "You're late, Tsuzuki-san." Tsuzuki: "...why you." Muraki: "Didn't I say so? I wanted a power beyond human knowledge. For example, the Shinigami's power...Even with the hint I have you, you truly are a stupid person." Tsuzuki throws his fuda: "Don't make fun of me!" Muraki blocks the fuda, laughing: "Do you like it? The bloody ceiling!!" Muraki: "I'll take this boy. I'll take good care of my new 'doll'." Tsuzuki: Distress, then madness...! If you can't protect what's important, yourself becomes weak. Hisoka!!" --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Previous Manga Index Next
