Shoujo Kakumei Utena Vol.1, P.1-49 P.2 (title page) Prologue: The Rose Seal P.3 (on a school campus) prim teacher: Tenjou Utena-san...! prim teacher: Get back here, young lady! prim teacher: A girl in that sort of outfit-- prim teacher: it's against school regulations! prim teacher: Are you listening, Utena-san? (other students watch in amusement) P.4 (a long-haired girl strides smugly forth in a modified boys' uniform) teacher: Utena-saan! (Outside a school office, some students peer in through the windows to see Tenjou Utena get chewed out. The prim female teacher is joined now by a random male teacher, who isn't doing much more than just standing there.) prim teacher: What in the world are you thinking?! prim teacher: Are you trying to stand out? prim teacher: Where on earth did you get ahold of that bright pink uniform anyway?? Utena: Sensei-- P.5 Utena: It's not "bright pink", it's "rose color." Utena: It's a very pretty color. I picked it out myself. Utena: And this isn't against school regulations. Utena: The regulations say "Students may only wear uniforms made by the specified manufacturers". Utena: This was made by one of those shops. prim teacher: It's for a boy! Utena: This type of uniform suits my personality better. A skirt would get torn right away. (Utena's eyes narrow) Utena: I run and jump around all day, so all the boys would see my underwear if I wear a miniskirt. Utena: This is the most rational choice, don't you think? (the teachers are speechless) P.6 Utena: If you insist that it's against regulations, I'll take the punishment. Utena: You can hit me, kick me, suspend me, expel me, or whatever you want. (the teachers are once again speechless... temporarily) prim teacher: I'm going to ask your guardian to come over here. Utena: Eh? Utena: You're going to call Aunt Yurika? Over something like this? Utena: My aunt is very busy with her interior design work... Utena: Sensei! P.7 (Utena waits out in the hallway as her young aunt talks things over with the teacher) Utena: Aunt Yurika... boy: Yo, Utena. (a male student with glasses waves hello to her) Utena: Kaidou, huh? Kaidou: Always the rebellious one, eh? That outfit is pretty cool. Utena: It is, isn't it? But they just don't seem to understand my sense of style. P.8 Utena: And instead of dealing with it with me personally, they bring in my guardian. It's just not right. (Utena's aunt bows politely to the teacher a couple of times) Utena: I can't stand this! Kaidou: Utena... (Utena runs into the office, while Kaidou tries to hold her back) Utena: Sensei! Utena: If you're going to scold someone, it should be me...! Kaidou: Stop it! Utena: Let me go! Kaidou: Owow! (Utena's aunt walks over to her) Utena: Aunt... Yurika: Utena-chan. (she smiles, kinda creepily actually) P.9 (and slaps Utena across the face) Yurika: Don't make a commotion. (still smiling, creepy...) Yurika: Go home ahead of me. Utena: Oh...kay. prim teacher: You can't just send students home on your own discretion... Yurika: Sensei! Yurika: If that girl is a little strange, the fault is in the way I raised her. Yurika: She's worries about others and is too kind-hearted for her own good. P.10 Yurika: When Utena was six years old, her parents died... Yurika: I was very young myself at the time and didn't know how to explain it to her. Yurika: In tears... I told her "your papa and mama have gone someplace far away." Yurika: Then Utena said "don't cry"... Yurika: "Until papa and mama return, I'll stay with you instead"... prim teacher: My... Yurika: Ever since then... she's never asked me about her parents or cried in front of me once. P.11 Yurika: That's the kind of girl Utena is. (on her way home, Utena bounds over a wall gracefully) voice: Utena... (Kaidou climbs over the same wall, somewhat less agilely) Kaidou: Can't you walk on sidewalks like a normal person? Utena: I prefer to cut my own paths. P.12 Utena: If you don't like the danger Utena: then don't fall in love with me. Kaidou: What, are you talking about? Kaidou: Utena...! Wait up! P.13 Kaidou: Is there someone you like, Utena? Utena: ... Me? Utena: I... (Utena notices a letter sticking out of her mailbox) Utena: The rose seal letter... It came this year too! Kaidou: Huh...? P.14 Utena: The rose scent... Utena: From that time-- card: (written) This year we'll meet once again. Kaidou: Utena? Kaidou: Your face is red. What's wrong? What did your letter say? Utena? Utena: It's... the same fragrance. P.15 Utena: Could it really be Utena: from him? (she starts to sprint away) Kaidou: Who's "him"? Kaidou: Utena!! Utena: The one I like...! (Utena runs up the stairs of her house) P.16 (she opens a drawer and pulls out a stack of letters) Kaidou: The same seal on the envelope... Kaidou: This is the 7th one? And the rose seal ring? Utena: Who said you could come into my house?! Utena: Every year... when the roses bloom in the garden, I receive one of these. Utena: The sender's name and address is never written on the envelope, so I don't know who they're from... Utena: But, at the bottom of my heart I always think "perhaps". P.17 (image of a younger Utena walking in the rain) Utena: On that day, 7 years ago, Utena: no one told me, but I understood that my papa and mama were never going to return. Utena: If I hadn't met that person... Utena: I didn't understand what was going on. Utena: I just kept walking... (little Utena gets knocked over by a passerby and lands near a fence with a hole in it) P.18 (next to the fence the ground drops off over a canal) Utena: I was tired of being alone. Utena: It was just like being absorbed into sleep. Utena: My body headed toward the water and slowly Utena: fell... P.19 (Utena falls from the fence into the canal, but is rescued by a mysterious man) P.20 ~Utena: Where am I...? ~Utena: Inside the river...? ~Utena: Oh...... ~Utena: Rose... fragrance. P.21 (the mysterious man kisses/licks the tears from her face) ~Utena: Who...? ~man: It's alright. P.22 ~man: You're not alone. ~man: I've given you strength, so you can walk with nobility. ~man: You must go on-- ~Utena: I don't want to... P.23 ~man: The two of us will surely meet again someday. ~man: If you have not lost your noble thoughts, then-- Utena: "Noble..." Utena: I had never heard the word before... Utena: But somehow I understood what it meant. P.24 Utena: He disappeared into thin air then. Utena: And I was in a brilliant garden of roses Utena: Inside my hand was a ring... Utena: ... I could hear my aunt's voice from far off, and I returned to myself. P.25 Utena: It was as if I had awoken from a dream. Kaidou: That... Don't tell me you believe all that? Kaidou: It doesn't suit you at all, that sort of princess story... Utena: I think so too... Utena: I don't remember how old he was or what he looked like. Utena: But I still can feel the rose perfume and his gentle kiss. Utena: That's why I've nicknamed him "peropero-kun". Kaidou: It was a dream! Kaidou: What man would give a girl he'd just met a ring and send a card to her every year? P.26 Utena: Ye...ah, I've wondered if the ring really came from my parents... and if Aunt Yurika is the one who sends me the cards... Kaidou: Right? Right? Utena: But... Utena: This year the card said "we'll meet". And besides, it has his scent on it. Utena: I think my peropero-kun really will appear. Utena: That's why I'm going to continue wearing these clothes. Utena: To be as much like him as possible. Kaidou: That... Take those clothes off! Utena...!! P.27 (Kaidou grabs Utena by the collar) Kaidou: Your peropero-kun doesn't exist. Take a look at reality! Kaidou: Your aunt is the one sending the letters. I'll prove it to you!! (both freeze as they realize how close their faces are to eachother) Utena: Let... go. Kaidou: Yeah... Kaidou: Anyway. P.28 Kaidou: Anyway, I'll prove it to you. Kaidou: I'm borrowing these letters. Utena: Kaidou?! (he walks away from her house) Utena: Hey, you didn't even... Utena: If you ask Aunt Yurika about the letters I won't forgive you! Utena: If you bother her in any way we won't be friends any more! Utena: Got it? Kaidou: Hmph. P.29 (a young man in front of Utena's house peers up at her) Utena: Eh? Utena: Who......? P.30 Utena: He resembles him a little, doesn't he...? (the young man bows and walks away) P.31 Utena: Why did that guy... Utena: look at me that way...? Utena: With such kind eyes. Utena: My peropero-kun...... voice: I'm home! Utena: It's my aunt! P.32 (Utena grabs her aunt by the arm) Utena: Perfect timing, auntie, welcome home! Utena: I made your favorite tomato spaghetti! Utena: Hurry up and sit down before it gets cold! Yurika: Why don't you have a seat also. Let's talk. Utena: [yee, that smile worries me] Utena: I've thought about it, but... Utena: I like wearing the pink uniform, so... Yurika: It's alright for you to wear it. The teachers have decided to give you special permission. Utena: Huh...? P.33 Yurika: I didn't want to mention it until I was sure, Yurika: but it looks like I'm going to Holland soon. Yurika: A new hotel is going to be built in Amsterdam, and I've been entrusted with heading the interior design work. Yurika: The job will take at least two years, so I'd like for you to come with me to Amsterdam. Yurika: I told your teachers at school that you might transfer before summer vacation, and they said that it would be fine. Utena: Transfer? Utena: Go overseas before summer break......? Utena: This is a really good job for you, isn't it? Yurika: Yes, it's a great opportunity. Utena: Then I guess we couldn't be here for the rest of this year, right? Yurika: You don't want to go, Utena? Utena: It's not that... P.34 (Chuou Library) Kaidou: The message is different every year...... Kaidou: The back is a photo... Kaidou: Seven times... Kaidou: Hm? Kaidou: Could it be? Kaidou: This is... P.35 (at school) Utena: You found proof that my aunt mailed the letters? Kaidou: That's right. I went to the library to investigate. Kaidou: See? Where do you think these letters were sent from? Kaidou: The postmark is always Hououshi. Utena: Uhuh... Kaidou: Do you know what's in Hououshi? Utena: What? Kaidou: The main building of your aunt's company is there. P.36 Utena: And that's proof? Kaidou: I'm saying that your aunt mails these letters when she goes to work at that building. Utena: Hmmm. Kaidou: And what about the font? It's the same as that on the new year's card you sent me. Kaidou: In other words, these letters were typed at your house. Utena: ...... Kaidou: So, Utena? Kaidou: Isn't it apparent that these letters are from your aunt? Kaidou: She's probably trying to play some sort of rose season Santa Claus for you because you don't have parents. Kaidou: She sends a message to encourage you every year. Kaidou: There's no such thing as peropero-kun. Kaidou: He's just part of a daydream you saw as a kid. P.37 Kaidou: That's why you should stop hanging on to these fantasies. Kaidou: The reality is right in front of your eyes and... Huh? Kaidou: Utena? Utena: A childhood dream that I must awaken from. Utena: The faint scent, the rose seal, the gentle kiss... P.38 Utena: I have to forget them. (at Utena's home) voice: I'm home. Utena: Welcome home, aunt. Yurika: It's really windy outside, Utena. Yurika: I've brought a guest with me this evening. Yurika: Come in, Wakaouji-kun. P.39 (It's the young man who passed by the house earlier. Is it just me or does he look very 70's disco?) Utena: From before. Yurika: This is my niece, Utena. She's in her first year of junior high. Yurika: This is Wakaouji Aoi-kun, a college student who's part-timing as an assistant in my office. Yurika: We met on the street by chance and just started talking and talking, so I invited him to come over. Wakaouji: Sorry to visit so late. P.40 Yurika: Utena, get Wakaouji-kun some tea. I'm going to change clothes. (she leaves the room) Utena: So, you like roses? Utena: You were hanging out by the hedges earlier. (Utena's front yard is filled with rose bushes) Wakaouji: Ah... you remember? Well, that wasn't the only reason. Wakaouji: "Utena" is a very unusual name. Wakaouji: It means the "calyx" of a flower, right? Utena: You're very knowledgable. Wakaouji: Thanks. (Utena notices the ring on his left hand) P.41 Utena: He's wearing a rose seal ring... just like mine. Why does he have one...? P.42 Wakaouji: It's a nice name. Wakaouji: Very noble. Utena: My peropero-kun really does exist. Utena: Could this person be him...? P.43 Utena: I was only six at the time, so I wondered if it was all a dream. Utena: But... those rose seal letters came to me. Utena: Has the person himself... finally appeared before me...? P.44 Utena: Could he be the peropero-kun I've been awaiting...?! Wakaouji: I've heard a lot about you from Yurika-san, er... your aunt. Wakaouji: She told me about the pink uniform ordeal. Utena: Ah... that-- Wakaouji: You're a lot like your aunt. You decide what you want to do and then go for it. Wakaouji: I like strong women. P.45 Utena: "I like..." Utena: "Like..." Utena: Um, can I ask you something, Wakaouji-san? Wakaouji: Hm...? Utena: You said before that you weren't hanging around the hedges just because you like roses... Utena: Does that mean there was another reason? (Wakaouji puts down his teacup nervously) P.46 Utena: He was at a loss...!! Utena: He must be my peropero-kun after all. Utena: I know that rose mark ring you're wearing. Utena: Every year... I receive a letter with the same seal design on it. Wakaouji: This...? Utena: I've... always wanted to know!! P.47 Utena: Who is the person that sends me those letters...... (Utena's aunt reappears abruptly) Yurika: Wakaouji-kun! The wind is really blowing hard, so I think we should bring that rose inside. {kachan} Yurika: ...... It sounded like something broke on the veranda just now... (she runs outside) Yurika: Ahhhh! Utena: ... Aunt? P.48 (a rose with a broken pot is lying on the ground) Yurika: It's the rare breed of white rose. Yurika: And you had just given it to me too, Wakaouji-san. Yurika: Look at the poor thing. Yurika: From the roots it looks a little like a blue rose. Utena: Aunt Yurika. Utena: The scent of this rose, it's the same. Utena: The same as the rose sealed letters... Wakaouji: It'll be alright, Yurika-san. P.49 Utena: The same as peropero-kun... Wakaouji: The stem isn't broken, so it should be fine if we just replant the roots. Wakaouji: This isn't a breed that we cultivated at my alma mater, but it seems strong. Yurika: Really...? Wakaouji: (to Utena) Would you like to help me? Wakaouji: We can fix it together, Utena-chan. Utena: It's him... Utena: No mistake. Utena: He's my peropero-kun.
