I'll do what the doctor told me to..." "I'll have the injections." 6 Hokuto: "I'm your elder sister; it's natural for me to be worried." "Especially keeping in mind that, since you were little, your fever has a tendency to go up a lot and not come down. That is reason enough for your sister to be so worried." p 104 1 Subaru: "Thank you." 2 Loudspeaker: "Pin pon. Subaru Sumeragi, Subaru Sumeragi, please report to the pharmacy for your medication." Subaru: "Ah." 3 Hokuto: "Ho, ho, ho, your sister will bring it to you." 4 Subaru: "...Thank you, Hokuto." p 105 3 "Have you come alone?" Youngster: "Yes." "But, my Mom will come and pick me up later." 4 Subaru: "Gee, how brave." 5 Youngster: "Do you have a cold, dear brother(1)?" Subaru: "Yes, but I'll get better once the doctor gives me some injections; don't worry. Do you have a cold, also?" 6 Youngster: "No, it's not that." p 106 1 "They do things to me in that room over there." "That one back there." 2 "I'm waiting now because it isn't my turn yet." 5 Nurse: "Yuuya, Yuuya." 6 Yuuya: "Dear brother," "Will you be coming again?" p 107 1 Subaru: "Yes, the day after tomorrow, I'll be coming again for my medicine." Yuuya: "The day after tomorrow!" "What time will you be coming? The same as today?" 2 "Since I come every two days," "We'll be able to see each other again." 3 Subaru: "You come every two days?" 4 Nurse: "Yuuya." Yuuya: "Yeees." 5 "Bye-bye, dear brother." p 108 1 Subaru: "So, his name is 'Yuuya'." 3 "That should be is mother..." 4 "...She doesn't look well..." "...having a sick son...It must be really hard on her..." 5 Hokuto: "Subaru, they've already given me the medicine." 6 "In addition, I have brought you a choufer." p 109 2 Subaru: "Seishiro." Seishiro: "Good morning, Subaru. How are you?" 3 Subaru: "Don't worry. But, why are you here...?" Seishiro: "When I returned home after visiting a patient, I found a message from Hokuto on the answering machine." 4 Hokuto: "Your beloved Subaru has a cold, I've left to take him to Shinjuku Hospital. It would be really nice if you would come and pick us up." 5 Subaru: "I'm...I'm sorry, you were working and yet have come expressly..." Seishiro: "It's nothing. I heard that my BELOVED Subaru was sick; I never doubted for a moment that I would come." p 110 1 Hokuto: "Seishiro, this time you have scored some good points." Seishiro: "Seishiro Sakurazuka will spare no effort in his acquisition of Subaru's love." Subaru: "Se...Se...Se...Seishiro." 2 Hokuto: "By the way, Subaru," "Whom were you waving good-bye to?" 3 Subaru: "It was a boy who comes to the hospital frequently, and, even though he's only 10 years old, he came alone..." Hokuto: "It has to be hard for a child. What sort of treatment does he have to come here for?" 4 Subaru: "He told me that they take him to that room..." "He said that, since he comes to the hospital every two days, we'll be able to see each other again." p 111 1 "I have to come back the day after tomorrow." 3 Seishiro: "...This boy may have a kidney disease. In that case, he would need kidney dialysis." Subaru: "...Eh?" p 112 4 Subaru: "A kidney disease..." 5 Seishiro: "That room that Subaru indicated with his finger, it's a special room for dialysis treatments." "Perhaps the boy comes to the hospital so frequently because he has an illness related to his kidney." p 113 1 "Dialysis involves some medical apparatus that replaces the kidneys when they don't function normally." "It depends upon the individual, but, in general, patients need treatment every two to three days." "It is painful to have to spend so much time in the hospital," "And that boy has to come to the hopital every two days..." 2 Hokuto: "...How terrible." 3 "Subaru must also be thinking that this is terrible..." Seishiro: "You have a very good heart, Hokuto." 4 Hokuto: "Subaru is the one that has the very good heart." p 114 1 "For as long as I can remember, Subaru has suffered the bad things that happen to others as if they were happening to himself." "If others are sad, Subaru is as well. If others suffer, Subaru also suffers." "It isn't hypocrisy. Subaru is really like that." 2 "As an onmyouji, he has been to places where others have been unfortunate and have suffered." 3 "Subaru will never get used to this." p 115 1 "Subaru feels connected to every person that he has ever met." "Even now, I'm sure he remembers them all." 2 "Even if these people forget him, Subaru will never forget them." "He always carries them within him. He will never be able to distance himself from them." p 116 1 "I realized this when I was young." "Subaru used to always be like this." 2 "His soul is purer than the snow." 3 "And, if someone breaks his heart, I am sure that he will die." 4 "I ask myself, 'Will Subaru ever have someone special to love?'" Seishiro: "Don't worry..." 5 "I believe you to be the person that Subaru most loves in the world." Hokuto: "I'm his sister." p 117 1 "Someday, Subaru will fall in love with someone." "And, he will fall so deeply that he will lose all sense of reality and will become weak." "Unconditionally, he will give up his heart and soul to this person." 3 "But." p 118-119 1 "If Subaru falls so completely in love with someone special..." 2 "And that person betrays him..." 3 "Without any doubt, Subaru will die." p 120 1 Seishiro: "Hokuto, you also have" "A very good heart." 2 Hokuto: "Ho, ho, ho. I'm grateful for your praise." "Now Hokuto is going to bring her dear brother some milk tea." 3 "I'll prepare it for him." 5 Seishiro: "A sensible person," "With a pure heart." "Just as I've thought from the beginning." p 121 "The final day of our bet slowly approaches." "Subaru." p 122 3 Subaru: "I hope that Yuuya will come..." 6 "Yuuya!!" p 123 1 Yuuya: "Ah!...Dear brother..." 2 Subaru: "Yuuya." "Are you well?" Yuuya: "...Yeah." 3 "I'm just a little bit sick." "But, don't worry..." 4 Nurse: "Yuuya, rest a bit until your" "Mother comes to pick you up." 5 Yuuya: "Y...yes." p 124 1 "You're leaving already, dear brother?" 2 Subaru: "He is so lonely..." 3 "They've already given me my medicine," "But I have remained to wait with you." 4 Yuuya: "Th...an...ks..." 5 Nurse: "Yuuya!" "Yuuya!" p 125 2 Subaru: "He's still so little..." 3 "He comes to the hospital every two days to receive dialysis treatment." 4 "I would like to see him playing with his friends..." 7 Mother: "I can't wait a moment more!" p 126 1 "Yuuya has already endured three years of waiting." "He takes the medicine prescribed to him every day. He comes for dialysis treatment every two days!" 2 "When it hurts him, he cries." "I care about him so much..." 3 "I...I cannot wait any longer...!" 5 Doctor: "Yuuya isn't the only one like this," 6 "Nor is he the only one in this hospital. There are many people with kidney diseases in Japan, and one must wait for a long time for a transplant." p 127 1 "Please, you have to be patient." "If he sees how unhappy you are, your son will get upset." 2 Mother: "Sob...sob...sob...sob." 3 "Sob...sob...sob." 4 Yuuya: "Mommy..." 5 "It hurts..." 6 "It hurts..." p 130 2 Seishiro: "Thank you very much for everything." 3 Subaru: "Seishiro!" Seishiro: "I brought you one of Hokuto's homemade cakes." 4 "There is a Shinto Shrine above the hospital, isn't there?" 5 Subaru: "Yes." Seishiro: "Once a year, the Sumeragi perform a ceremony to purify the area..." p 131 1 "Or so Hokuto has told me." "Your Grandmother has requested of you that you choose a site where the purification ceremony is to be performed, and you have accepted the duty" "At this Shinjuku hospital, am I right?" 2 "You never turn down difficult jobs; you really should rest." "You're making Hokuto really worried." 3 "They admit your little friend in this hospital, right?" "Hokuto had a date today and couldn't come." 4 "But she gave this to me for your sick friend." p 132 1 Subaru: "Forgive me, even though you're busy with your work, you have come expressly..." 2 Seishiro: "It's okay." 3 "If he knew the reason for my being a veterinarian," "Subaru would surely be absolutely horrified." 4 Subaru: "Eh?" 5 Seishiro: "Oh, nothing." p 133 1 Yuuya: "Yes." 2 Subaru: "Good morning." Yuuya: "Dear brother!" 3 Subaru: "You look good today, Yuuya". Yuuya: "Yeah, that's because this is the day they don't do things to me." 4 "Look, dear brother, I've already finished the book that you gave me." 5 Subaru: "Yuuya, this is a gift from my twin sister." Yuuya: "Wow! Thank you." 6 "How wonderful! The sister of my dear brother has made this?" 7 Subaru: "Yes. Hokuto can do anything." p 134 1 Yuuya: "And who is that uncle?" Subaru: "Un...uncle?" Seishiro: "Good morning. Are you Yuuya? My name is Seishiro Sakurazuka, and I maintain a veterinary clinic in your dear brother Subaru's neighborhood." 2 Yuuya: "Great, Uncle! So you're a veterinarian!" Subaru: "A...ahh, Yuuya, Seishiro isn't an Uncle, yet..." 4 Doctor: "Yuuya, have you been a good boy?" Yuuya: "Yes." 7 Mother: "Thank you..." p 135 1 Nurse: "Doctor!!" "The patient in room 302!" 5 Doctor: "Excuse me, Yuuya, I'll be back later." p 136 3 Subaru: "Madam..." 4 Doctor: "Mr. Danna." "He was found brain-dead." 5 "He's now connected to artificial respiration, but this machine will not save him..." "He will never again open his eyes." p 137 1 Woman: "Anata...!" 2 "Anataaa...sob...sob." "Anataa." 4 Mother: "Kidney..." "...kidney for...Yuuya." p 138 4 Subaru: "Madam!!" Mother: "Let go of me!" 5 "He is brain-dead! Can I not beg for one of his kidneys...?" p 139 1 "Maybe there's still time to have a transplant done!!" 2 Subaru: "Please, wait." "Madam!" Mother: "If we don't move quickly, the kidney will be lost!" Subaru: "Madam!" 4 Mother: "Let go! Let go of me, please!!" "Yuuya! Yuuya!!" 5 Seishiro: "Try to put yourself in the shoes of the sick one's family." "This time is a terrible one for them. He has just been declared brain-dead." p 140 1 "Even though a cure is impossible," "They hope that he will someday be cured." 3 "It is terrible to view the sickness of people that you love" 4 "And not be able to do anything but watch." "It is horribly paralyzing." p 141 1 "It may be that is no other medicine to treat people found brain-dead." "But, for their families, they are still alive." 2 Mother: "Sob...sob." 3 "I understand that." 4 "I understand that woman's suffering." "Life has been cruel to me, also; that is why I understand." 5 "It was so hard and painful to see them sicken." "I envy people in good health." p 142 1 "Perhaps the whole world can't be healthy, but..." "If there isn't health, there cannot be anything else!" 2 "Yuuya...Yuuya...forgive me...forgive me." "Forgive me...for denying you your health..." 3 Subaru: "Madam..." p 143 1 Doctor: "Naturally, being sick is painful to everyone, but, for some families, it is even more hurtful." 2 "Above all in the case of that woman." 3 "Four years ago, her firstborn died from the same kidney disease." 4 "The child's name was Maya," "And she was a little girl." 5 "Her husband died very young, so she had to expend much effort raising her two children." "But both suffered from the same kidney disease." 6 "She told us to take one of her kidneys." 7 "Since we all have two kidneys, taking one from a healthy body does not constitute anything life-threatening." "Nevertheless, one is only able to safely remove a single kidney." "Since she had two sick children, she had to choose between the two." p 144 1 "Yuuya." "Or Maya." 2 "She chose Maya, but later, Maya rejected the transplanted kidney." "We had to remove it and return her to dialysis, but her health had changed." 3 "Maya's condition worsened...and we lost her four years ago." "Since then, she hasn't stopped regreting the decision that she made." 4 "If, on that occassion, she had chosen Yuuya, perhaps she would have been able to save Maya." "And, perhaps, Yuuya would not have rejected the transplant." 6 Seishiro: "In Japan, it is hard to get kidney transplants." "There are various reasons." p 145 1 "To give up a part of one's body while alive or even after death is very hard..." "When people die, they become Buddhas, and, to preserve their sacred existence, they cannot lose their innards (2). This is why they resist..." 2 "Subaru, have you ever seen a person who is brain-dead?" 4 "The brain has already stopped, and the person will never again open his eyes." "In spite of that," "These days, medical science has developed a host of machines intended to keep the heart functioning." "They even breathe, and their bodies are warm." 5 "Thus, organ transplant is possible. It would be ideal to take fresh organs from a brain-dead patient." p 146-147 1 "They still live, but their recovery is but a dream." "One could take a heart, kidneys, a liver, eyes." "But it is very difficult for their loved ones to understand this." 2 Subaru: "I..." 3 "If my body could serve someone, I would be happy." 4 "If a part of my body could be useful to a sick person and both of us could continue living, really, I would be very happy." "And when I cannot continue living, I will give up everything..." "Later, they'll only have creamate me." "And, I'll be nothing but ashes, but I'll never once stop being happy." 5 "In spite of that," "My decision is going to sadden Hokuto and my Grandmother a lot." 6 Seishiro: "No." p 148-149 1 "Hokuto will be happy. I'm sure that Hokuto will be happy with your decision." 2 "Even if you give up a part of your body, your loved ones will not cry." "In this way, a part of you will continue living. I believe they will be of the same opinion." "They will cry once, but a part of you will always be inside of that stranger." "Another person will be able to continue living," "And I will be so proud of you." p 150 1 "For this reason, Hokuto and your Grandmother will consent to your decision." "But," 2 "If you make Hokuto cry," "I'm sure that she'll be furious." "And, when Hokuto gets angry, it is truly terrible." 4 Subaru: "I wonder how is Yuuya today." 6 "I've brought him the book that he told me he wanted to read. I hope he'll be able to get up." p 151 1 "If his health were good," "We would be able to go out for a stroll together." 3 "...It would also give his mother relief..." 4 "I will talk with her today." 5 "I want to give Yuuya one of my kidneys..." 6 Voice: "Yuuya!!" p 152 1 Mother: "Yuuya!" "Yuuya!!" 2 Nurse: "Quickly, take him to intensive care! Everything is ready! Give the notice!" 4 Mother: "Yuuya! Forgive me!" 5 "If only your mother had chosen you back then!" "Yuuya!!" 7 Subaru: "Yuuya!!" p 153 1 Hokuto: "Subaru has gone to visit to bring him a book. Kids these days want Supernintendo games (3)." "I would have brought him ice cream." 2 Seishiro: "But Yuuya seems to like books." 3 "And, when he was discussing animals with Subaru, it seemed like they were becoming best buddies..." Hokuto: "Seems like we're going to have two Subarus now." 4 Seishiro: "Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha." 5 Mother: "I'm sorry..." "Forgive me..." p 154 1 "I'm sorry...I'm sorr..." Subaru: "Madam..." 2 Mother: "Yuuya...Maya...Forgive me..." "Forgive me..." "There is no kidney..." "No one is willing to donate one..." "Yuuya..." 3 Subaru: "Madam..." 5 Mother: "Yuuya...For Yuuya..." "A kidney..." p 155 1 Subaru: "M...Ma...dam...?" 2 Mother: "Eh, you...You will give a kidney to Yuuya...?" "Eh, you will give one up...?" 3 Subaru: "Madam..." p 156 2 Mother: "Yuuya...If they don't do something soon, Yuuya..." 3 Subaru: "Madam...! Please, listen to me. I have decided to donate one of my kidneys to Yuuya..." 4 Mother: "Yuuya!!" p 158 1 Hokuto: "Subaru!!" p 160 2 Mother: "You can serve also." "I'm going to bring Yuuya a kidney right away..." 3 Hokuto: "Seishiro!!" p 161 3 Subaru: "Seishi...ro." p 162 2 "Seishiro! Seishiro!!" 3 "Seishiro!" Hokuto: "Subaru!" 4 "Please, calm down! Subaru!" Subaru: "Seishiro!!" 6 "Seishiro!" p 163 1 "Seishiro." 2 Hokuto: "...Subaru..." 3 Subaru: "Seishiro." p 164 "Sei...shi...ro..." END OF CHAPTER 8: REBIRTH ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- FOOTNOTES: (1) "Hermanito" literally means "little brother", but the "-ito" may also convey connotations of "beloved" or "dear". In Japanese, it might have originally been something like, "onii-chan", which would be the literal translation of "hermanito", but, since I'm not sure, you will see "hermanito" translated as "dear brother". In any language, the "dear brother" shouldn't be taken literally; it is clearly an affectionate form of address, nothing more. (2) "Entraņas" (dual meaning of innards or essence). It is a shame that I couldn't think of an English word that has the same double meaning. (3) The Spanish translation said "Supernintendo", so I'm leaving it as-is. Besides, that is how it is known to most English speakers. However, in Japan, the console video game system is called, (if my memory serves me) "Superfamicom". So, the original text undoubtedly says, "Superfamicom".
