"Oooonnnnne in Ginza." 2 "So they are..." 3 "Truly terrible that they cannot meet..." 4 "'The Story of a Love in Ginza' is best sung together." Seishiro: "Goodness, not only does Hokuto do all of the household chores--she sings very well too." 5 Hokuto: "Naturally!" "Ha! I'm not just the maid that cooks the food." 6 "Okay." "Next, Subaru will sing." Subaru: "Mmm...me? Are you nuts?!" p 64 1 Hokuto: "Listen to me!" "Subaru, even though you've never been in a Karaoke box before, you cannot turn down Seishiro's invitation!" 2 "Do you want to waste all of Seishiro's hard-earned money?" 3 Subaru: "I...I don't know how to sing well...and...I'm tone-deaf." 4 Seishiro: "Subaru, you have a marvelous voice." "There is no reason for you get get upset." Subaru: "Sei...Seishiro..." 5 Hokuto: "Okay! Now for the secret song!" Seishiro: "What's the 'secret song'?" p 65 1 Hokuto: "Press the number you want; the box will tell you what you have to sing. This game will be as easy as eating with chopsticks." "However, something tells me we aren't going to be eating." 2 Seishiro: "So, this is the 'secret song' that they say enchants young people." 3 Hokuto: "Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. Hold on, Seishiro, there's something else." "Hmm, and if you don't sing, what shall we do?" 4 "Let's see..." 6 "Subaru, you will have to do whatever" "Seishiro wants from you." p 66 1 Subaru: "Eh?! Eh?! Eh?! Eh?! Eh?!" Seishiro: "A marvelous plan!" Hokuto: "And, if you are the one who can't sing, you will have to do whatever Subaru tells you to do." 2 Seishiro: "And if it is you who can't sing, what do we get to do?" Hokuto: "Well, since I'm a girl, you can't punish me!" Seishiro: "Being female is a good thing." 3 Hokuto: "Let's go!" 4 Subaru: "Umm..." Hokuto: "Come on, Subaru! Sing!" p 67 1 Seishiro: "Oh!" 4 "It seems that I have forgotten to bring my tobacco with me." 5 "Subaru, I don't know why I don't have it, but there's a vending machine near the entrance." "Would you please spare a moment to buy a pack for me?" p 68 1 "Mild Seven Select." 2 Subaru: "Ah...sure." 4 Hokuto: "...You're so good at taking advantage of Subaru." Seishiro: "Huh? Where's this coming from?" 5 Hokuto: "Even though we already know that you smoke in your house," "Would you please not smoke in front of Subaru and me?" p 69 1 "But if what you're looking for is for him to fall into your arms, take care..." 2 Seishiro: "For if Subaru cries, you will kill me." p 70 3 "Don't maaaaake him cry, don't maaaaake him cry." "Or yooooou will regreeeet it." p 71 2 Subaru: "That was scary." 3 "This nonsense is so typical of Hokuto, but...this time, she really scared me." 4 "Seishiro." "I didn't know the song, and you came to my rescue." p 72 1 Subaru: "Since Seishiro is so nice, upon seeing that I couldn't sing, he told me that stupidity so I wouldn't have to suffer through it..." 2 "What kind of person is Seishiro really?" 3 "What kind of person?" p 73 1 "Ahh!!!" 2 Woman: "Is that Seishiro your boyfriend?" Subaru: "You...you...must be mistaken!" 4 Woman: "Well! You just happen to be a girl." Subaru: "Just...just 'happen'--It's not like that! I'm a boy." p 74 1 Woman: "Since you're so attractive," "I thought you were a girl." 2 "If you're a boy, that's wonderful!" "Stay with me for a bit." "I'm sick of singing karaoke alone." 3 Subaru: "Ahh!" 4 Woman: "Let's see. What should we sing?" p 75 1 Subaru: "I...I...can barely sing...Besides, I really should be going...there are other people waiting..." 2 Woman: "Go, then. Do you smoke?" 3 "Even though you're only a high school student...Or, do you go to college?" 4 Subaru: "This is for Seishiro..." 5 Woman: "Ah! Your boyfriend." Subaru: "It's not like that!" p 76 1 Woman: "...That man used to smoke the same brand of tobacco." 2 Subaru: "Huh?" 3 Woman: "Come! I'll sing first!" 4 "Attention! I will enter without fault into the Karaoke ranking." "Attention to the melody!" p 77 4 Subaru: "This woman is..." p 78 2 Woman: "You seem lost." "You're not holding some sort of grudge against me, are you?" 4 "What's wrong? You seem depressed. Am I truly asking too much of you?" p 79 1 "This time I'll sing something more tragic. How about a love song?" 2 Subaru: "What...What's wrong?" Woman: "Eh?" 4 Subaru: "While you were singing, I noticed true pain within you." "You seem really sad..." p 80 2 "I...I'm sorry. I'm out of line..." Woman: "No, It's okay." 3 "You're right." p 81 1 "You suprise me." 2 "Your beautiful pair of eyes aren't the only thing you have." 3 "I'm immoral." p 82 1 Subaru: "Eh?" 2 Woman: "I did immoral things" "With my boss." 3 "It seems like the entire world laughs" "At these sort of songs." 5 "It wouldn't bother you to listen to the tale of a forgotten one?" 7 "It wouldn't bother you if a strange girl suddenly brought you into a Karaoke box with her?" p 83 1 "You are a good boy, but you should surely think that I'm a bit crazy." 3 "He was the head of my department. I'm so stupid; I fell for him because he was so self-assured (1)." 4 "The first time that I saw him, we had dinner together; and the third time that we met, we slept together." 5 "I come from a big house in the country." p 84 1 "Before coming to Tokyo, I used to watch TV animation." "I always thought that Tokyo was a terrible place." "But I was completely mistaken. There was no reason to worry myself." 2 "In three months I found myself admiring the city and completely swept away." 3 "At first, everything seemed so clear." "He had a wife and a son." 4 "I only intended to have a good time with him, and, naturally, he was of a like mind. The hour of my marriage, that would have been the most suitable moment to leave him behind." p 85 1 "But, during all of this, I began to" "Fall seriously for him." 2 "That man also smoked Milk Seven Select." 3 "Since I don't smoke, I told him that it bothered me and made me nauseous. I asked him to slack off a bit." 4 "But he didn't do that." 5 "His face, his voice, his cheerful personality--it all drove me crazy." "He was a magnificent man and, for this reason, I fell in love with him." 6 "Even though his smoking repulsed me, every day we returned to this Karaoke box." p 86-87 1 "I never liked songs about women who suffer misfortunes." "I always thought they were just about women so pitiful that they don't deserve my respect." "I was a fool to believe that those sort of things could never happen to me." 2 "Among the successes of Karaoke, there are many songs about tragic loves. The entire world remains tranquil because they all think that it can't happen to them." "A lost love doesn't seem like a big deal until it is you who has lost it. I ask myself why it changed into but a sad memory." p 88 1 "But there is something that doesn't change in Karaoke songs. The protagonists who find happy endings in their songs are never immoral." "I don't understand why, if they are immoral like I," "They have to be deceptive." 2 "I was in caught up in a dream." "I dreamed that that man would leave his wife and marry me." 3 "But one day that man told me:" "'Let's end it.'" p 89 1 "He decided without even discussing it with me." "It seemed like the lyrics of a song." 3 "When he told me that, without love, without the least discussion," "I knew then that my life had ended." p 90-91 1 "I, who frequently laughed at the tales of girls in those songs, now found myself living a tale just like those girls." "This time it will be others who laugh at me." 2 Subaru: "Stop it; no one is going to laugh at you." 3 "Your pain and your suffering are real; you are not the same as the girls in these songs." "I assure you that no one is going to laugh at you." p 92 1 "You have to live your own life. Your life has nothing to do with the women from these songs." 2 "I want to say that even though in the songs it all finally ends badly," 3 "You have not yet reached that ending point." 4 "Because of this..." p 93 "Because of this, you are going to continue." "Please, don't regret living, and try not to lose your way when you are reborn." p 94-95 4 Woman: "Thank you." p 96 3 Subaru: "Farewell." p 97 "Next time, don't kill yourself." "And, please, try to live happily." p 98 1 Hokuto: "It is better not to stuuuudyyyy..." 3 "Subaru, you're late!" Subaru: "Ahhh!" 4 Hokuto: "Where did you go!?" Subaru: "Hold...Hold on..." 5 Hokuto: "Well? Subaru, and the tabacco?" Subaru: "Th...th...that is..." "Hold...Hold on..." "I'll...I'll go buy another pack!" p 99 1 Seishiro: "Let it be, Subaru. I have another pack in the car." 2 Subaru: "But..." 3 Seishiro: "Thank you very much." "For the bother." p 100 1 Subaru: "Se...Seishiro!" Hokuto: "Well!" "You shouldn't do these things in front of your sister." 2 Subaru: "Is...Is this thanks for the tabacco?" Seishiro: "Ha ha ha ha." 3 Subaru: "Or, just by happenstance..." "...could Seishiro have known that woman..." 4 Hokuto: "Subaru! Since you escaped before, your punishment shall be to sing a duet with Seishiro where the two of you will play the parts of lovers!!" Subaru: "Hokuto!" END OF CHAPTER 7: BOX --------------------------------------------------------------------------- FOOTNOTES: (1) "Soberbio" is, literally, "arrogant", with secondary meanings of "splendid". Although, in English, "arrogant" has a very negative connotation, in Spanish, it is traditionally considered a positive trait. So, I changed this to "self-assured", to preserve this posititivity. In truth, though, the word is stronger than "self-assured" and weaker than "magnetic".
