Dakara Suki. Chapter Fifteen pg 124 "'I love you'. Because 'I love you'." pg 125 Today, the little bear went to the big bear's house again. He knocked on the door. As usual, the bear wouldn't let the little bear inside. But now, the little bear glimpsed his face from inside. When he wasn't busy, the bear would talk with the little bear in the garden. But they didn't really "talk", the little bear was the only one who ever spoke. But the little bear couldn't help but be happy that the other bear would sit and listen. About the dreams of the night before. About that morning. About the taste of that delicious honey at lunchtime. The little bear talked about many things. The big bear would just sit and look at the little bear. That made the little bear very happy, and she kept talking. pg 126 The little bear talked so much that her throat went dry. The little bear was thinking that she wanted something to drink and that she might go home for some milk. Then, a cup was held out in front of her. The one that was holding it out was the big bear. The little bear was very suprised, and said, "Um, this is..." "If you don't want it, fine." The big bear started to take the cup away. The little bear began to think. The big bear had said, "If you don't want it, fine." So did that mean that he had gotten the drink especially for the little bear? So the little bear said, "I will have it." The little bear took the cup from the big bear's hands. Inside the cup was some juice made from grapes. pg 127 "Could these grapes be..." the little bear said to the big bear, who had his usual angry expression. "I made it from the grapes that you brought me." When she heard the big bear's response, the little bear was suddenly very happy. The big bear had used the grapes. "Thank you very much." The little bear smiled at the big bear. The big bear still wore his usual angry expression, and asked, "Why are you thanking me?" But the little bear noticed something. The big bear did not have angry eyes. They were really very shy eyes. The little bear then thought that the big bear was really kind. When she drank the juice, the little bear discovered that it was very good. The little bear became happier and happier. pg 128 That day... This time, the big bear had given the little bear some apples. So along with her basketful of apples, the little bear had gone home. But for some reason, there was a crowd around the little bear's house. "What's wrong? Has something happened?" One of the bears stepped forward ansd said, "A thief has gotten inside." The little bear was very suprised and went inside her house. The window was broken, things were knocked down, and the inside was a mess. Another bear asked, "What did they steal?" "The grapes from the kitchen are gone." They were the same grapes from the day in the forest with the crow, when the big bear had saved her. She had dried the grapes and kept them so that she would remember that time. pg 129 The little bear was very sad. Why did it have to be those grapes? Why did it have to be the grapes from the time when the big bear had saved her? The grapes that the big bear had made grape juice from? All the other bears stood behind the little bear in the kitchen and began to talk. "Who did it?" "Who is the thief?" "That guy is suspicious!" someone said. "That's right, it must be him." "Because he's a stranger." "They say that he did bad things when he lived in other places." "I thought that he would do it again." "Its him, it's him." The other bears began to say that the thief was the tall bear with the glasses that lived nearby. pg 130 "You're wrong," the little bear said. "He wouldn't do that." "Why do you say that?" The other bears would not stop doubting the big bear. "Little bear, you weren't in the house, so you don't know who did it." "I don't know who did it, but I know it wasn't that bear." The little bear desperately tried to make everyone else understand. "Because that bear is a good person. He saved me when I was attacked by a crow in the forest. We talk together now. We talk about a lot of things." pg 131 But everyone else did not understand. "He did that to win you over, so that he could ask you about what was inside your house." "That's how he knew where the kitchen was." "What a jerk." "No, you're wrong. I know you're wrong," the little bear protested. "Hee wouldn't do that." "Why do you say that?" "You'll understand if you look at his eyes," the little bear replied. "If you look at a person's eyes, you can tell what kind of person they are, or what they're thinking. Because eyes don't tell lies." pg 132 Hinata: Eyes don't tell lies... pg 133 Touko: Hina... The door was open, you need to lock it properly... ...are you thinking about Asou-sensei? pg 134 Touko: I thought that I had seen eyes like Asou-sensei's somewhere before. And that it had something to do with your kidnappings... I never knew where, but... Those were the eyes of a policeman. Like the policemen who were always over at your house, Hinata... pg 135 Hinata: Eyes of a policeman...? ...no, you're wrong. Sensei's eyes weren't like the policemen then. The policemen were very worried about me too, but... Asou-sensei is different. pg 136 Touko: But Asou-sensei used to be a policeman. And he protected you just like them... Hinata: But it's different. Sensei's eyes were much, much... Much kinder eyes. pg 137 Touko: Then that means that surely, Asou-sensei showed his true self to you, Hinata. Book: $ If you look at a person's eyes, you can tell what kind of $ person they are, or what they're thinking. $ Because eyes don't tell lies. Hinata: ...Touko-chan. I understand. pg 138 Touko: What do you understand? Hinata: My own feelings! Touko: Hina?! pg 139 Touko: What's wrong, Hinata! Hinata: Sensei! Sensei!! pg 140 Touko: You can't just barge inside. pg 141 Hinata: Gone... His belongings are gone... Sensei is gone, too... Touko: Hinata... Didn't he tell you where he was going, or something?! Hinata: No idea... pg 142 Touko: You can't give up! If you do, then it's really the end! Isn't there anyone you can ask?! Someone who knows sensei well! Hinata: Tomo-kun!! pg 143 Screen: Asou Shirou Asahi Hinata Tomoaki: I wonder how Hina-chan's doing. I don't want her to cry... Tomoaki: Hina-chan!! Hinata: Do you know where Asou-sensei went?! pg 144 Hinata: I want to see sensei! Tomoaki: Why? Hinata: I have something I want to tell him. I realized when I read your picture book, Tomo-kun. "Eyes don't tell lies." So I want to tell sensei... pg 145 Tomoaki: Shirou is planning to go to another city. Hinata: When?! Tomoaki: Today. pg 146 Touko: H-Hina. How did it go... Hinata: See ya! Touko: Hey, Hina! Where are you going to?! Tomoaki: To Shirou. pg 147 Tomoaki: Knowing Hina-chan, she might be able to change that stubborn Shirou. Touko: I don't want Hina to have to cry anymore, though. Tomoaki: It'll be all right. pg 148 Kizu: ...are you all right with this? Asou: With what? Kizu: Leaving the city without telling Asahi-san anything. Asou: My job is done. There's nothing left to talk about. Kizu: Liar. Asou: How?! Kizu: You may never see her again. Asou: Right. We just were together because of the job, and no- pg 149 Kizu: That's not true. You've always been devoted to your work... But your feelings towards Asahi-san weren't purely professional, were they? It's impossible to think that everyone is special. Asou: I know. Kizu: But the feeling of someone being special doesn't have to be in negative numbers. There are times when you have to protect the person you feel is special. Asou: I know that, too. pg 150 Asou: But she thought I was just a good person. She's been kidnapped over and over, ever since she was young. Her father never paid enough attention to her, and he blamed his workers or the chauffeur... But it seems that she didn't want to cause any trouble for other people, so she started living alone once she got into high school. Her father apparently said that if she wanted to be alone so badly, he would let her, and he didn't send any assistants after her to help... But even so, he worried about her, and got me. pg 151 Asou: She's always alone in that big house. She always smiled, but she really was lonely. And then I showed up. I was someone who was together with her, and that was why she loved me. Kizu: ...what about you. What do you think of Asahi-san? Asou: I... pg 152 Hinata: ASOU-SENSEI!! Asou: You...! Why are you here...?! Hinata: Tomo-kun told me! Asou: I told you to control him better, didn't I! Kizu: I'm just his bodyguard, how am I supposed to do something like that? pg 153 Hinata: I made him tell me! Because I wanted to tell sensei- No, Asou-san, something! Asou: Wanted to tell me something? If you're upset because I tricked yo- Hinata: No! I'm very sorry that I cried, when I realized that the reason you did so much for me was because of your job. pg 154 Hinata: But, I really do love you, Asou-san. Asou: Why... Hinata: Because when you were with me, Asou-san, you had very kind eyes. I don't know if that's part of your job too, but you always looked at me with kind eyes that I loved. pg 155 Hinata: And I loved you because you did all the things that I loved, Asou-san, but... What you do from now on will be the things I love. pg 156 Hinata: That's why I love you, Asou-san. pg 157 Asou: ...I get it. I lose. Hinata: Lose how? Asou: I also l... pg 158 pg 159 Hinata: Really?! You really do?! Asou: Quit asking!! Hinata: Wow! Wow! WOW! Asou: Oh, it's time for the shinkansen to leave! Hinata: HUH?! I'm sorry for keeping you! (Will you be in time? Is it okay? Should I run too?!) pg 160 Hinata: What's this? Asou: Phone number. Hinata: Asou-san's?! Asou: You want someone else's? pg 161 Hinata: So I can call you? Asou: ...yeah. pg 162 "Did you call me a thief?" someone said. The little bear looked back, and saw the big bear with the glasses standing there. "You did it!" someone said. "That's right, that's right! It's obvious it was you!" someone else said. The little bear said with all his might, "No. It wasn't the big bear!" Then, the big bear stepped into the kitchen. Everyone watched him, wondreing what he would do, when he he held out a bird's feather. "That's a crow's feather, isn't it?" the little bear asked. "When you picked the grapes in the forest, you got attacked by a crow, didn't you." When the little bear heard this, she nodded. "The crows remembered that, and they came to steal my grapes away." The little bear understood. pg 163 All the others who had been blaming the big bear were silent. They left the little bear's house, muttering things like, "Great, so it wasn't him." The little bear and the big bear were left alone in the house. The little bear bowed, and said, "I'm sorry for troubling you. Especially because you don't like lively places." The big bear said nothing. Then, the bear began to clean up the messy house. "Oh, I'll do that myself!" But the big bear didn't answer the little bear. He silently kept cleaning the house up. The little bear was very happy that the big bear was helping her clean up the house. pg 164 When they were finished cleaning, it was already nighttime. "Thank you very much," the little bear thanked the big bear. "Because of you, everything is clean now. I'd like you to stay for dinner as my thanks, but then it will get very late." The big bear said something then, but the little bear didn't hear it very well. "What? Did you just say something?" The big bear repeated himself, still in a whisper. "If you want dinner, come to my house. It's ready there." "Is it all right?" The little bear could not help being happy. The big bear was inviting her to dinner and letting her go to his house. The little bear turned then, and she could see the big bear's eyes as though they were glowing. "Hurry up." The bear walked off to his own house. "Coming!" As the little bear followed after him... She thought that from now on, it would be wonderful if they could become very, very good friends. THE END
